MC to develop riverfront along Western Yamuna Canal
The Yamunanagar-Jagadhri Municipal Corporation (MCYJ) will develop a riverfront along the Western Yamuna Canal (WJC) in Yamunanagar under the Divya Nagar Yojana. The project will extend from OP Jindal Park to the old Jagadhri-Saharanpur road, enhancing the city’s aesthetics and providing recreational spaces for residents.“This riverfront will be built along the WJC over a stretch of about 4.5 kilometre. The government has granted administrative approval for this project, with an estimated cost of Rs 128.78 crore,” said Municipal Commissioner Ayush Sinha.
He explained that the River Water Front Project would be developed on the western bank of the WJC and include landscaped areas, footpaths, drainage systems, high fencing mesh, gardens, beautifully designed benches, fancy lighting and greenery.
“The development of this riverfront will give Yamunanagar a new look, creating a scenic and enjoyable space along the canal. It will provide residents and tourists an opportunity for relaxation, picnicking, and recreational activities,” Sinha added.
Several areas, including Azad Nagar, Chitta Mandir Road and Shanti Colony, have been designated for the project. These densely populated localities often face waste accumulation along the canal, which the riverfront development aims to resolve.
“Once completed, garbage will not accumulate on the canal banks and sewage and drain water will no longer flow directly into the canal. This will improve water quality through pollution-reduction measures,” said Sinha.
Additionally, roads, footpaths, and stone walls will be constructed along the riverfront and fancy decorative lighting will be installed for better night-time visibility.
“This will help prevent crime and accidents in the area. During summers, the highest number of drowning incidents in the WJC are reported from this stretch. The riverfront development will significantly reduce such cases,” he added.
The project is also expected to serve as a fitness and recreational hub for local residents. “People living nearby will be able to walk, run, exercise, and engage in daily activities in a clean and scenic environment,” said Sinha.
