Short films and reels are no longer just tools for entertainment — they have become powerful vehicles for addressing social and environmental issues. Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and wildlife-centric content, internationally renowned documentary filmmaker, national award winner and science communicator Rakesh Andaniya shared his expertise at a film-making workshop on “Short Film and Reel Production.”

The workshop, organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at Maharshi Dayanand University featured Andaniya as a special guest speaker.

Andaniya emphasised that smartphones could be utilised to create exceptional films. Drawing inspiration from renowned filmmakers like Mike Pandey, who have focused on environmental issues, he demonstrated that impactful storytelling is possible even with basic tools. On the first day of the two-day workshop, Andaniya covered various aspects of camera work and the technicalities of film production.

Andania highlighted that reels and films involve meticulous planning, shooting, editing and content treatment. He explained various aspects of short films, reels production through a PowerPoint presentation with gadgets, gears and advised students to choose subjects close to their hearts for filmmaking. Demonstrating smartphone camera functions, Andania shared his experiences and challenges in short filmmaking.

HoD of JMC Department Prof Harish Kumar welcomed the participants in his inaugural address and said the mobile revolution has opened up new avenues in the field of mass communication.

“Reels can be used to share educational and social content along with entertainment. In the fast-paced world of social media, reels and shorts have emerged as the ultimate attention-grabbers, captivating our eyes and time like never before,” he added.

Prof Harish hoped that students will thoroughly enjoy learning the technical aspects of this field in a hands-on and practical way. Short films and reels production is also creating opportunities for self-employment, he added.

The workshop was coordinated by Assistant Prof Sunil Mukherjee, who said that this two-day workshop is crucial for students’ skill development and capacity building, as well as enhancing their employability. Priya, a research scholar, extended vote of thanks. The workshop was attended by PRO Pankaj Nain; Dr Meenu from PG Nehru College, Jhajjar; Dr Sushil Kumar from BMU; and Dr Sumit Sahrawat from LN Hindu College, Rohtak; along with students of MDU and nearby colleges and research scholars.
