Tightening the noose around illegal meat shops being run in the jurisdiction of the Thanesar Municipal Council, the council has directed the meat sellers to shift their shops outside the council’s jurisdiction.

Executive Officer of Thanesar Municipal Council Rajesh Kumar said the council had appealed to the shopkeepers selling meat products under the Municipal Council’s jurisdiction to shift their shops; otherwise, action would be taken.

He said, “Kurukshetra is being developed as a holy city as well as a religious tourist destination in the country and abroad. A large number of people come here and find meat shops at entry points, which doesn’t present a good picture. In this regard, recently, 10 shops were sealed on Amin Road and some at Umri Chowk have also been shut down. Apart from these, notices were issued to 13 illegal meat shops in Pipli and were told to shift their shops to some other place outside the limits of the Municipal Council.”

The Executive Officer said directions had also been issued to the staff and the employees of the sanitation branch to keep a close watch on such shops being operated in limits of the municipal council.

He said, “Teams of the municipal council are keeping a watch and the shopkeepers are being appealed repeatedly to shift their shops at the earliest. The illegal shops near Sirsala Road, Pehowa Road and Jhansa Road will be closed soon. Notices will be issued to the shop owners and if they fail to follow the directions and shift their shops within the stipulated time, further action will be taken with the help of the police. They should move outside the limits of the council themselves to avoid any kind of inconvenience

Even last month, the Kurukshetra district administration conducted an anti-encroachment drive and removed nearly seven meat shops along the Saraswati river.

A district official said the administration was regularly receiving information and complaints that meat shops were being run on the banks of the Saraswati from Pipli to Jyotisar and this was also violating the sanctity of the holy river. The government has been working on rejuvenating the Saraswati river and promoting religious tourism in Kurukshetra and such activities along the river were not acceptable. The meat shops were removed along the river in the areas of Bishangarh village and Dhakka Basti.
