Concerned by the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) has urged the Haryana Government to play the role of a mediator between the farmers and the Union Government.
Recently, union leaders extended support to the ongoing farmers' agitation at Haryana-Punjab interstate border and also met Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death.
BKU (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni said: “The health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been deteriorating, and the Haryana Government can play a crucial role in getting the ongoing agitation over by mediating between the farmers and the Centre. The farmers have been raising genuine issues and the government should accept their demands. We will meet Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday and request him to play the role of mediator and get the agitation over.”
Besides this, the union has decided to raise various issues related to Haryana farmers in the meeting.
“Despite the assurance, FIRs against the farmers who had participated in various agitations in the past haven't been cancelled yet. Besides this, the passports of such farmers are not being prepared, and the arms licences are also not being renewed. The government should cancel all FIRs and issue directions to the officials concerned to prepare passports and renew arms licenses," he added.
The union will also raise demands related to MGNREGA scheme and hike in sugarcane prices. Charuni said: “Farmers are also not satisfied with the draft of the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing. Private godowns and silos will be treated as grain markets and the produce will be directly sent to the facilities instead of bringing it to mandis first, and this will lead to the closure of grain markets. The farmers of Haryana and Punjab will suffer the most if such policies are implemented, and the labourers and commission agents will be left without work. We will express our concerns with the policy”, he said.
