National ranking list: No institution in top 100 in ‘overall’ category

Maharishi Markandeshwar is 85th, Manav Rachna 96th; no college makes cut

Not a single Haryana institution featured in the ‘overall’ category, as well as in the colleges, research, innovation, and architectural categories, in the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. However, in the specialised categories of ‘Management’, ‘Agriculture and Allied Sectors’, and ‘Dental’, the institutions from the state featured among the best.

The NIRF 2025, the 10th edition of the rankings, was released today across 17 categories.

Haryana’s institutes have not made it into the top 100 in the ‘overall’ category of higher education institutions for six straight years. In the university category, which includes 100 institutions, Maharishi Markandeshwar in Ambala ranked 85th, while Manav Rachna International Institute of Research & Studies, Faridabad, was placed at 96th. Both are private universities, and their rankings have declined compared to last year. Once again, neither the state universities nor the Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh, made it to the top 100.

The NIRF has evaluated institutes across ‘Teaching, Learning and Resources’, ‘Research and Professional Practice’, ‘Graduation Outcomes’, ‘Outreach and Inclusivity’, and ‘Perception’.

Among the top 100 engineering colleges in the country, the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, is ranked 85th, dropping four spots from its 2024 ranking.

Management institutes

Among the top 100 management institutes, four are from Haryana. The Management Development Institute, Gurugram, is ranked ninth, moving up from 11th in 2024, while the Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak, dropped from 12th last year to 19th this year. The Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurugram, is ranked 50th, climbing two spots from last year. BML Munjal University, Gurugram, is 77th, up six spots from last year.

Six state institutes are among the top 100 pharmacy institutes in the country. Maharishi Markandeshwar, Ambala, has kept its 26th position from last year, while Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, has fallen from 38th place last year to 43rd this year.

One medical institute, Maharishi Markandeshwar, Ambala, is placed 33rd, climbing two spots from last year.

Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, doesn’t figure in the list. Last year, it was ranked 50th. The Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Rohtak, is ranked 12th this year among the top 40 dental institutes, up from 23rd last year.

Agriculture & allied sector

Among the top 40 agricultural and allied sectors institutes, the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, has maintained its second position in the country. Ch Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, has fallen to the 10th spot this year, down from seventh last year.

The National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship & Management, Sonepat, is ranked 22nd, while Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar, has dropped to 37th place this year.

Three universities are in the top 50 state public universities across the country, but in 2024, there were four. Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, is ranked 32nd, up 15 spots from its previous ranking.

Kurukshetra University is ranked 35th, climbing six spots from 2024. “We have worked a lot on improving research output in our varsity, which led to good results. In the coming years, the research output will further improve. We are also restructuring our courses,” said Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, Vice Chancellor.

MDU is ranked 46th, falling 11 places from last year.

On improving the rankings of institutions, he suggested, “We need to focus on recruiting regular faculty. It will improve the student-teacher ratio, which is a parameter in NIRF. It will also improve research output and research quality. We need to file more patents. Also, our institutes need more funding for labs and libraries.”
