The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) will provide a set of seven milk adulteration detection kits to 700 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the country so that dairy farmers and other stakeholders can be made aware about the methods to detect adulteration at field level.

The kits have been developed by the scientists of Dairy Chemistry Division comprising Dr Rajan Sharma, Dr YS Rajput and Dr Bimlesh Mann of the NDRI to detect adulteration of neutraliser, urea, glucose, hydrogen peroxide, maltodextrine, sucrose and salt in milk.

These kits are easy to use and can detect adulteration in just 10 minutes. This step is being initiated by the NDRI to take technology to farmers’ doorsteps so that they can get benefits of these kits.

“Combating milk adulteration is a big challenge these days. Our scientists have developed various kits to detect adulteration in milk. Now, we have decided to take this technology to farmers’ field, so we have decided to provide kits to all 700 KVKs in the country,” said Dr MS Chauhan, Director, NDRI.

“These kits are user-friendly and anyone can detect adulteration easily by reading the manual, which is in both Hindi and English,” said the Director.

Dr Rajan Sharma maintained that these kits were developed under a project financed by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Technology. Technologies of these kits have been transferred to seven leading dairy industries and entrepreneurs.

he said the kits could detect the adulteration of neutraliser, urea, glucose, hydrogen peroxide, maltodextrine, sucrose and salt in milk within 10 minutes.

“The results of these kits are better as well as less expensive than the conventional method like wet chemistry-based method. The cost of analysing milk samples varies from 50 paise to Rs 6 per sample, depending on type of adulteration,” he maintained.
