An official in the department said the academic session had started on Tueday but the books are yet to be received and no exact information was available about their arrival.

Old books being used

To ensure that the studies are not affected, books from the students who have moved to the next classes have been procured. Some sets are available in the book bank of the school as well.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Elementary Education has directed the district officials to conduct a two-week class readiness programme to prepare students for the next class. The teachers will clear the doubts of the students and help them in understanding the topics in which they didn’t perform well in the previous class, and improve their competency level.

Amit Chhabra, a primary teacher and spokesman of the Rajkiya Prathmik Shikshak Sangh, said: “The new academic session has started, but the books are yet to arrive. For the students of Classes I to IV, the department has provided worksheets for the remedial classes so students could be prepared for the next class. Though the programme is good for weak students, it is a wastage of time for the bright students.

"The old books have been arranged from the students who have moved to the next class, but the department should ensure that the new books are available before the session begins. The condition of the old books and prefilled answers in the books will cause inconvenience to the students."

Ramesh Kumar, Principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Ambala Cantonment, said: “Last year, the books arrived on time and were available at the beginning of the session. This year the books are yet to be received. But to ensure that the study of the students is not affected, books from the students who have moved to the next classes have been procured. Some sets were available in the book bank of the school as well. After getting the new books, old books will be replaced with the new ones.”

District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), Ambala, Sudhir Kalra said: “Parvesh Utsav is being observed in the government schools to increase the enrollment. The books are expected to arrive soon. Till then, old books of the students who have moved to the next class will be used. The new books will be stored at Government Senior Secondary School, Khuda Kalan, and soon after receiving the books, these will be distributed within a week.”
