Sirsa, August 2
Sirsa MP Kumari Selja said the new academic session had started without sufficient number of professors in state colleges. She questioned the Haryana Government as to how students could effectively study under these conditions and challenged its’s assertion that teaching was being conducted according to the New Education Policy.
In a press note issued to the media, Selja highlighted the government’s repeated failure in education, particularly in women’s education. She reminded the government that it had promised to open women’s colleges at every 20 kilometers, but many regions were still awaiting these institutions. In areas where colleges were established, they often started with just one or two rooms , which lacked proper facilities and professors.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also addressed these issues.
According to Selja, the government admitted in a court affidavit that 4,738 professor positions, or 60 per cent of the total, were vacant. Furthermore, a writ petition in April 2024 revealed that many government-appointed educators were not qualified. Despite admitting to these shortcomings, the government had not taken corrective measures she said. Selja laid stress on the importance of nurturing young talent and warned neglecting education that could endanger the nation’s future.
She also said the state had the high unemployment rate, with 4.6 million job-seekers and an unemployment rate exceeding 37 per cent was the highest in India. — OC
