Farmers clashed with the police while trying to gherao Speaker Gian Chand Gupta’s residence in Sector 17 here on Saturday over the delay in paddy procurement.

They broke the barricades set up near the Chandimandir toll plaza with tractors, leaving many farmers and cops injured. The police then resorted to lathicharge on farmers to push them back.

Denying the claim, the police said the protesters tried to run over cops with tractors, leaving a few of them injured.

Later, many protesters were also taken into custody to main law and order. At 6 pm, BKU (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh reached the toll barrier and sat on a dharna, seeking the release of the detained farmers and seized tractors. — TNS
