Faridabad, February 24

The local municipal corporation (MC) today sealed nine commercial units operating illegally in the NIT area. The action came in the wake of a contempt petition filed by a local resident, scheduled to come up for hearing on Tuesday.

A petition filed by KL Gera in the High Court in 2008 had claimed that a large number of shops in 38 units were functioning without change of land use (CLU), needed to start commercial activity in a residential area. He had alleged that all illegal units had been operating under the patronage of MC officials.

“A contempt petition was filed in 2012, in which the then Municipal Commissioner was named as the main respondent. The matter was heard by the court in January, when it asked the MC to submit its reply on February 25,” said Gera.

Ombir Singh, MC Executive Engineer, said nine units having neither CLU nor permission were sealed today. He said 29 units were spared as their owners had either acquired CLU or deposited fee for conversion as per government policy.

He said up to three shops were operational in each of the unit sealed. Gera claimed that delayed action on the part of the MC had led to regularisation of several shops and commercial establishments in residential areas of the NIT in the past several years.
