In a pioneering step to make classrooms more participative, interactive and inclusive, the Rohtak administration has introduced a new seating arrangement at all government schools in the district.

“The initiative aims to eliminate the traditional divide between front-benchers and back-benchers and ensure equal learning opportunities for every child,” said DC Sachin Gupta.

Under this innovative model, students would be seated in a U-shaped or circular arrangement. “This design allows all students to face the teacher directly, enabling better eye contact, easier communication and more engaging interactions,” he said.

As per a press note issued on Tuesday, the teachers who have already adopted the new arrangement claim it has significantly improved student attentiveness and classroom discipline.

“Education is not just about textbooks but also about the environment we create for our children. By breaking the traditional classroom hierarchy of front and back benches, we are ensuring that every child receives equal attention and importance. This initiative reflects our commitment to providing quality, inclusive, and student-centric education in government schools,” said the DC.

The initiative was being rolled out in a phased manner across all schools in the district. Training sessions are also being conducted for teachers to help them make the most of the new system.

The authorities expect that the change will improve classroom performance while also instilling greater confidence in students. “All educational institutions in the district are encouraged to explore this model and adopt it wherever feasible, so that more children can benefit from inclusive and engaging learning environments,” he said, adding that with this progressive step, Rohtak was positioning itself at the forefront of educational innovation.

Key benefits of initiative

• Inclusive learning: Every child is placed in an equal position, removing the “back-bencher” tag

• Better interaction: Teachers have a complete view of the class, ensuring that no student is overlooked

• Increased participation: The format encourages students to be more confident, responsive, and active in discussions

• Improved discipline: With all students visible and engaged, distractions are reduced significantly

• Holistic development: The model fosters collaboration, dialogue, and mutual respect in the classroom
