NRI cells being set up across country, says women panel member
Move aimed at assisting women hit by fraudulent marriages by NRIs
Delina Khongdup, a member of National Commission for Women, said that NRI cells were being established across the country to assist women affected by fraudulent or problematic marriages by NRIs.
She encouraged women to carefully examine legal documents before marriage and seek immediate help from the commission or legal authorities if they were encountered by any problem.
“Cases related to NRI marriages are increasing across the country and the National Commission for Women is helping the affected women,” said Khongdup.
Khongdup was speaking as a chief guest at an awareness programme on ‘NRI Marriages: Do’s and Don’ts — A way forward in the state of Haryana’ held by Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women at DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar, on Thursday.
At the programme, Chairperson of Haryana State Commission for Women Renu Bhatia was also one of the chief guests and Vice-Chancellor of Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat, Prof Dr Devinder Singh was the guest of honour.
Chief Judicial Magistrate of the District Legal Services Authority, Sumitra Kadian and acting principal of DAV Girls College, Dr Surinder Kaur were special guests.
Dr Balwinder Kaur, director of the Labour Studies Centre at Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University served as a project coordinator. Advocate and former member of National Commission for Women Bhavika Sharma served as the resource person at the event.
Chairperson Renu Bhatia emphasised the importance of awareness and legal literacy in matters related to NRI marriages.She spoke about some real-life NRI cases, highlighting the challenges faced by women abroad.
She also urged educational institutions to regularly organise such awareness programmes to empower young women and ensure their safety and legal protection.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Devinder Singh commended the initiative and highlighted the importance of such collaborations between educational institutions and legal bodies to raise awareness about women’s legal rights and social empowerment.
