Online frauds: Six persons duped of Rs 1 crore

In six separate incidents of online fraud in past one month, six persons were cheated of about Rs 1.09 crore by fraudsters across the district. The police sources said that the cyber police station has six FIRs of fraud filed with it and the investigation in the matter was underway.
In one case, a youth, Bhushan Bhasin, was duped of Rs 60 lakh by a woman named Hargun Chopra whom he came across on a matrimonial site. She said that she was keen on marrying him and even asked him to make investments by recommending various investment firms in India and abroad. Bhushan invested a total of about Rs 60.53 lakh. Eventually, Hargun and others involved in the case simply blocked him.
In another case, Harish Chandra, a retired engineer from the PWD, alleged that he was cheated of Rs 27.17 lakh by an unknown person. Chandra came in contact with the caller via a WhatsApp call on January 31. The accused trapped him by seeking his help in some issues related to an operation of his grandmother and a brawl case that took place in Canada. The person assured to return him the amount. The complainant said that he deposited the amount from his and his wife’s the bank accounts.
Later, the accused contacted Harish by posing as an RBI officer and threatened him with serious consequences. He and his wife sent Rs 27.17 lakh to the given bank accounts via online mode. Later, when he contacted his son, he learnt that he had fallen victim to online fraud.
Another resident, Zakir Ali of Sector 33, who is an assistant at the Food Corporation of India in Hisar was duped of Rs 13.39 lakh by online fraudsters on the pretext of an online task to earn commission. Another resident, Krishna, was contacted by someone to offer cement on cheaper rates. He sent Rs 2.60 lakh to the person, but did not receive the cement cart.
In yet another case, Dinesh, a resident of Kharak Punia village, had downloaded a third-party app on the recommendation of an accused, Later, the accused had withdrawn Rs 1.34 lakh from his account. In one more case, Shravan, a resident of Sector 14 of Hisar, said that he was duped of Rs 4.14 lakh in an online fraud.
