The MBBS interns serving at the Rohtak PGIMS have raised objections to being engaged in taking samples and filling up investigation slips and other forms instead of getting exposure to the examination and treatment of patients.

In a joint representation to the authorities of the Pt Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences and Rohtak PGIMS, the MBBS interns have demanded their intervention in ensuring the allotment of work to them as per the guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The MBBS interns have complained that they are made to sit in separate rooms at PGIMS OPDs and hence kept away from the examination and treatment of patients despite specific orders by the PGIMS Director. The interns have requested the UHS and PGIMS authorities to allow them to sit with consultants in the OPDs so that they can learn patient management.

They have urged the authorities concerned to assign the task of taking samples and filling up slips and forms to dedicated staff. “It is further requested that all departments be instructed to give exposure to the interns at least to the certifiable procedural skills mentioned in the Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) logbooks as it is not being done in most of the departments,” states the representation.

Contacted for comments, PGIMS Director Dr SS Lohchab said, “The heads of all departments concerned will be directed to ensure that the NMC guidelines are followed in letter and spirit while imparting training to the MBBS interns,” he asserted, adding that all concerns raised by the interns would be addressed.
