The police have arrested an Uttarakhand resident for allegedly duping a man of Rs 25 lakh on the pretext of providing him a gold brick. The man, who is suspected to have links in Nepal, was produced in a court here today and taken on three-day police remand.
SP Virender Vij said Balwinder, a resident of Sandeel village, had gone to Nepal along with Tara Chand of the village where he came in contact with Ashok Kumar of Tanakpur in Uttarakhand. He told Balwinder that he buys gold from Nepal for sale in Uttarakhand and can give him a brick for Rs 25 lakh.
The complainant said he handed over Rs 25 lakh in cash to Ashok. He delivered a gold brick and a chain to him but when he got them checked, they turned out to be fake.
The police have booked Ashok under Sections 406, 420 and 120B of the IPC. The accused confessed during interrogation that he was already facing a case of gold smuggling in Nepal and had incurred huge expenditure in that case. So he duped the victim through a conspiracy.
