In a shocking incident, over 20 stray cows died in Hisar after consuming festive food items such as halwa and poori offered by people.

The deceased cows were found in various areas including Mahavir Colony, Mill Gate, Sector 14, Azad Nagar, Mirzapur and PLA Chowki. Dr Nilesh Sindhu, a senior veterinary expert from Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (LUVAS), explained that consumption of halwa, poori, and other fried foods leads to acidosis, a condition that severely affects the digestive system of cattle. The disease causes difficulty in breathing and can result in collapse. “If not treated immediately, it can be fatal,” he warned, emphasising the need for prompt veterinary care.

Dr Sindhu recommended feeding only green fodder to cattle to avoid such incidents. Cow protection activist Sitaram Singla remarked that even during the Shraddha period, two to three cows died due to similar causes. He added that on Amavasya, many people feed cows halwa and poori in large quantities believing it to be charitable, but such practices often prove harmful.
