Choti had been serving a life sentence for his wife’s murder. According to police records, he has been involved in around 80 criminal cases, including burglary, murder and attempted murder.

On August 14, 2024, Surender was granted a four-week parole. However, he failed to surrender to Bhondsi Jail on September 12, 2024, when his parole ended. The jail administration filed a complaint, prompting the police to register an FIR under the Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act at the IMT, Manesar police station. A reward of Rs 10,000 was also announced for information leading to his capture.
