Petition on sedition law dismissed

The Punjab and Haryana High Court toady dismissed a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the sedition law in the wake of the registration of a case against 100 protesting farmers on July 11.

In the petition placed before the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ravi Shanker Jha and Justice Arun Palli, the Haryana Progressive Farmers Union had sought the quashing of Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code on the grounds that it was violative of Articles 14, 19(1)(a) and 21 of the Constitution of India.

Directions were also sought for quashing/deleting the Sections 124A and 307 (attempt to murder) from the FIR registered on July 11 at the Civil Lines police station in Sirsa.
