Sources said some of the wood-operated crematoriums had been faced a shortage of space as well as wood in view of a surge in Covid fatalities. Several bereaved families were forced to perform the cremation of Covid victims in the parking area of a crematorium of the NIT last month, which led to a protest among local residents.

An MC employee said the average number of cremations in the city had been between 35 and 45, but official figures were less.
