Police foil illegal dog fighting event

Acting on a tip-off, the Sadar police in Sonepat successfully averted an illegal dog fighting event scheduled to take place on January 27 at 10 pm near the flyover in Rohat village, Kharkhoda.

Sources revealed that the police received intelligence from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, alerting them about the planned dog fight. Responding swiftly, a police team led by SHO Sadar, Inspector Umesh Kumar, reached the location, forcing the organisers to flee in their vehicles before the event could begin.

“PETA India commends Assistant Commissioner of Police Jeet Singh for his prompt action in preventing this illegal act and reinforcing the message that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated,” said Virendra Singh, Cruelty Response Coordinator, PETA India.

PETA India has also urged the government to ban the breeding and ownership of dogs like pit bull, stating that these breeds are the most abused worldwide and are commonly used for illegal dog fights in India. Inciting dogs to fight is a punishable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

SHO Umesh Kumar confirmed that upon reaching the location, the police presence dispersed the suspected organisers, who fled in their cars, abandoning the event before it could commence. He assured that further investigation is underway to identify and take action against those involved.

The incident highlights the persistent issue of illegal dog fighting in India and authorities are working to ensure stricter enforcement against such cruel practices.
