The ongoing police investigation into the MBBS exam scam at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (UHSR), has uncovered links to a private firm based in Jaipur (Rajasthan). The firm specialises in preparing academic work and maintaining records.

Significantly, a girl student enrolled in the bachelor of physiotherapy course was, as per the probe, allegedly in contact with an official from the Jaipur-based firm, who was accused of manipulating MBBS exam results in exchange for money.

She is among four individuals recently arrested by the district police in connection with the scam. The others include a UHSR employee, a former resident doctor at BPS Government Medical College for Women at Khanpur Kalan, and a male physiotherapy student. With these arrests, the total number of people held in the case has risen to 10, including seven UHSR employees. All of them are at present lodged in the district jail.

“During interrogation, the girl student admitted to helping students pass their exams by facilitating the alteration of award lists just before the results were declared, with assistance from the Rajasthan-based firm’s official. She collected money from one of the accused, retained a share for herself and passed the remaining amount to the firm’s official,” said the police sources.

Sources claimed that acting on her disclosure, a police team recently raided a location in Jaipur to arrest the firm’s official. However, the team learnt that the suspect had died recently, forcing it to return empty-handed. Investigators are now trying to identify whether any other officials from the firm are involved, to take the probe forward in this direction.

“The scam was carried out using two methods — direct and indirect. In the indirect method, answer sheets were smuggled out from the university’s secrecy branch after the exams, rewritten and then resubmitted for evaluation. In the direct method, award lists were tampered with to inflate students’ marks before declaration of the results. A hefty amount was charged from the MBBS students for ensuring their pass marks under direct method,” the sources added.

Meanwhile, Prof HK Aggarwal, Vice-Chancellor of the UHSR, said the process to suspend the arrested employee, Balram, had been initiated.

“We are fully committed to upholding the integrity of the examination system. Strict action is being taken against all those involved in the scam—no one will be spared. We have already terminated the services of employees found directly implicated in the matter,” said Dr Aggarwal.

A total of 41 individuals, 24 MBBS students of a private college and 17 UHSR employees, were booked in February in connection with the scam.
