MBBS students of World College of Medical Science and Research may be shifted to two other private medical colleges — Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute of Medical Science and Research (MMIMSR) in Ambala’s Mullana and SGT Medical College in Gurugram’s Budhera village.

The Department of Medical Education and Research, Haryana, has recently moved a proposal in this respect to the Medical Council of India (MCI) for approval.

A copy of it has also been submitted to Punjab and Haryana High Court which has been hearing a case filed by the students seeking shifting of their batch to another college, said sources.

To get their demand met, the students had also staged dharna for 108 days in Jhajjar city alleging that World College neither has adequate doctors to teach nor has patients in its hospital.

The proposal states that in all, 148 students were admitted in World College in academic session 2016-17. Hence, 74 students each shall be shifted to both the medical colleges through physical counselling on the basis of merit in NEET (UG) 2016.

“As many as 98 out of 150 seats got filled in the MMIMSR in academic session 2016-17. Therefore, if 74 students are shifted to this institute, then only 22 students would be over and above the sanctioned capacity of the institute. In SGT Medical College, admissions were made on 99 out of 100 MBBS seats. Hence, 73 students would be over and above the sanctioned capacity of this institute. From the academic session 2017 onwards, admissions in SGT Medical College have been made against 150 MBBS seats,” reads the proposal.

The proposal further states fee and other charges being paid by the students in World College for the corresponding academic year and the fee and other charges being charged by the institutes where the students would be shifted/adjusted for the corresponding academic year, whichever is higher, will be paid by the adjusted students of World College as was done in the case of shifting of students of Gold Field Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Faridabad.

Meanwhile, terming the government’s proposal for Mullana and Budhera colleges as inappropriate, Yogesh Yadav, brother of World College student Yogita, said all the students want to be shifted to colleges which are affiliated to Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak. The students had opted for World College as it was affiliated to it as well.

“It is not a right move. The two chosen colleges will charge more than double the fee.” Yadav said.
