Rain washes Sonepat MC’s claims over drain clean-up

The first heavy rain of the current monsoon season has washed-out the tall claims of cleaning of drainages by the Municipal Corporation in Sonepat. Sonepat recorded the highest rain of the season ie 47 mm today. Residents had to face a lot of problems due to water accumulation in the area. Similarly in Panipat, water accumulated at several low-lying places in the city.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Manoj Kumar, along with MC Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena visited the waterlogged areas today.

However, the rain provided respite to everyone from the humidity and scorching heat.

Sonepat was followed by Gannaur at 29mm here. Rai recorded 14 mm rain, Kharkhoda recorded 5mm and Khanpurkalan recorded only 2 mm rain.

Main roads, including Shani temple underpass, Kakroi Chowk near Shambhu Dayal School, Mama-Bhanja chowk, Geeta Bhawan chowk, Gurudwara road, Suri petrol pump road, Old DC road, Sector 14, 15, Model Town and other city areas got waterlogged as well.

The railway underpass near Shani temple was flooded and was filled with garbage as well.

After he carried out the inspection of the affected areas, the DC found that the water from drain number-6 had entered the city. Following this, the DC directed the MC Commissioner to install IPS at drain number-6 within 72 hours. He also warned that if the action would not be initiated within the set time period, he would write to the government for his suspension or for departmental action against him.

The DC also directed to install a pump sets for speedy water drainage from Kakroi Chowk, Suri petrol pump road and the Sector 23 chowk with immediate effect.

The generator at the Shambhu Dayal chowk near the underpass at the temple was found closed and the DC directed to deduct some amount from the payment of the company which gave the generator and also to serve notice upon the employee concerned.

DC Manoj Kumar further directed the MC officials to ensure the proper cleaning of the water harvesting pit near the underpass. Apart from this, the DC also discussed the problems occurred due to garbage dumping station here and to speed-up the efforts to resolve these problems.

DC Manoj Kumar also warned to initiate strict action against the agencies, if water got accumulated, and also directed all the agencies concerned to make appropriate arrangements of water drainage from the highways.

He directed the police to lodge case against the agencies in case of an accident on the highway due to waterlogging.
