Continuing with his rebellious stance against the state government on civic issues in Gurugram, BJP MP and MoS Rao Inderjit Singh has threatened to lead a protest in case a landfill in the city is not cleared by December.
Rao, who visited the Bandhwari landfill along with MCG officials today and reviewed the ongoing waste treatment work there, was approached by local villagers. They called out officials, saying that they were lying about the progress of work. The villagers threatened to launch a dharna over the issue. Rao asked them to wait till December, saying that if the needful wasn’t done by then, he would himself lead the protest.
“Wait till December. If the landfill is not cleared by then, I will stage a dharna against the state government,” Rao said. Earlier, Rao had demanded a CBI inquiry against MCG officials and the Nayab Saini-led state government, accusing them of being in connivance with the waste concessionaire, who, he said, had turned Gurugram into “kuragram”. “Sanitation and clean surroundings are a basic constitutional right. Waste in the city needs immediate attention and despite tall claims by the authorities, residents say nothing has been done on the ground,” Rao said.
“The landfill is ruining lives and the reputation of the millennium city. I will do whatever it takes to get people their due even if it means sitting on a dharna with the affected villagers,” he added.
During his visit to Gurugram today, the Union Minister visited Bandhwari and took stock of the ongoing efforts to resolve the sanitation issues and directed the officials concerned to speed up the work. While the officials claimed that things were under control, the villagers said they were lying.
Narhari Singh Banger, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram, said of the 39.75 lakh metric tonne waste at the plant, 30.18 lakh metric tonne had been disposed of from January 2023 to July 2024. The remaining waste will be disposed of by December this year.
