Gurugram: Rape suspect lands in police net after 5 months

Gurugram, January 23

After a five-month-long manhunt, the police arrested a 24-year-old man accused of rape. He was held from Kolkata. The man had fled after allegedly raping a minor girl, and was constantly changing locations. He was produced before a city court, which sent him to judicial custody on Tuesday.

According to the police, the suspect, identified as Baghpat native Suraj, was working as a security guard in Badshahpur in August last year when he raped a 13-year-old girl at a hilly area near Bhondsi. He fled the spot, leaving the girl behind.

Since the incident, the suspect kept changing his identity and locations in an effort to evade the police. He had also stolen 12 mobile phones from a hotel in Delhi while on the run.Police authorities arrested the suspect from Hapur in Kolkata on January 19. He was produced before a Kolkata court and remanded in four-day transit custody. Today, the suspect was brought to Gurugram. Suraj worked as a labourer in many states, including Delhi and Rajasthan. He would frequently commit crimes of theft and snatching and flee the area, according to authorities.

“It is revealed that the accused has a criminal record. Suraj had been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment in a snatching case in the year 2018. After serving 2.5 years, he changed his name while on parole and started working as a security guard”, said Priyanshu Dewan, ACP, Badshahpur.
