After nearly more than a month of inconvenience, the Public Health Department has finally begun repairing the broken sewer line on Begu Road. The issue was raised by The Tribune, which led to the department starting the digging work on Tuesday with the help of an earthmoving machine. The soil on the road has been cleared, and part of the road has been blocked to connect the main sewer line from Begu Road to Rangri Khera.
During the digging work, it was found that the sewer line was severely damaged. Once the digging work is complete, a new 175 ft long pipeline will be installed to ensure smooth water drainage. The repair work is being carried out under a Rs 3.32 lakh tender issued by the department.
For the past more than a month, a temporary pump had been installed near Jagdamba Paper Mill to help with water drainage, and makeshift soil bridges were placed over the pipes. However, the temporary setup caused frequent accidents as motorcycles, scooters and e-rickshaws kept overturning on the muddy path. The constant dust from the soil was also making it difficult for both drivers and shopkeepers in the area. The shopkeepers had protested multiple times due to these issues.
The repair work is now under way, bringing relief to the residents. Previously, two tenders were issued for the repair work, but no agency had come forward.
According to the Public Health Department officials, the sewer line on Begu Road is around 20-25 years old. It was damaged during the installation of Internet cables near Jagdamba Paper Mill, leading to sewage overflow and mixing with drinking water in several nearby colonies such as Kalyan Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Parmarth Colony, and Preet Nagar.
Gurpreet Singh, the Junior Engineer of the department, confirmed that digging work was in progress and after the damaged line was removed, a new sewer line would be laid.
