The rising instances of illegal mining at Taoru in Nuh district were flagged at the monthly meeting of the district-level task force (DLTF) held in June following which efforts to check it had been intensified.

Action taken in Haryana in 2022-23

FIRs registered 138

Fine imposed Rs 1,31,29,158

Vehicles impounded 253

In the first quarter of the financial year 2022-23 itself, the district administration has impounded 80 vehicles while 23 FIRs have already been registered, DK Behra, Director, Mines and Geology, said. In the last financial year, 239 FIRs were registered while 387 vehicles were impounded and illegal mining was rampant in the Aravallis despite a ban.

“There are no auctioned mines in Nuh and this entire business is illegal. A district-level task force has been made under the Deputy Commissioner in every district of the state and is fully empowered to check illegal mining. Following today’s incident, I have already sought a report from the District Mining Officer while a report from the DC will also be sought since he heads the task force,” Behra stated.

Meanwhile, stating that the shocking incident where the Taoru DSP was run over by an overloaded dumper in Nuh today was a consequence of the stepped up vigil by the administration against illegal mining, sources said the administration had zeroed in on a few villages which had repeatedly figured in the FIRs.

“Increased cases of mining were being reported from Taoru, Ferozepur Jhirka and the Punhana blocks of Nuh and this was a matter of concern at the last DLTF meeting. It was decided to step up vigil in the areas,” the Deputy Commissioner, Ajay Kumar, said.

While the DLTF meets on a monthly basis to review the situation, several teams have been constituted under the SDMs for better coordination among the different departments. “After this incident, we will intensify our efforts to curb illegal mining even further,” the DC said.

It has been decided to use satellite imagery for regular monitoring while vehicles will be equipped with global positioning system (GPS), sources said.
