Rising mercury increases demand for clay pots in Sirsa
rise across Sirsa, the demand for clay pots has also gone up.
Local potters are now busy fulfilling several orders, working day and night along with their families to keep up with the increasing demand.
Despite the availability of modern appliances like refrigerators, clay pots remain the first choice for many when it comes to storing drinking water.
Mohan Lal, a local potter, said water stored in clay pots not only stayed naturally cool but was also considered healthier. These pots had tiny pores that allowed slow evaporation. When air passed through these pores, it cooled the water inside naturally, he added.
According to Ayurveda and traditional health practices, water stored in clay pots was better for digestion, and overall health, compared to water chilled in refrigerators, he said.
Raja Ram, an elderly potter, said clay, by nature, filtered out impurities and added beneficial minerals to water, making it good for the body.
Drinking this water helped flush out toxins and strengthened the immune system, he added. He suggests that pregnant women should prefer drinking water stored in clay pots instead water stored in refrigerators.
Unlike refrigerated water, which might seem cold initially but could increase body heat later, water stored in clay pots helped maintain a stable body temperature, he said.
The earthy fragrance of clay pots not only added a soothing aroma, but also brought a sense of calm and relaxation to the environment, he added.
In traditional Indian households, clay utensils have been used for centuries, and even today, their benefits are appreciated.
In today’s world, plastic and aluminium containers are commonly used, but they come with health risks.
Plastics may contain harmful chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which are known to increase the risk of cancer. According to the experts, aluminium vessels, when used for cooking, can react with food and cause allergies or other health problems. Clay pots, on the other hand, are made from natural materials and are eco-friendly and chemical-free.
With the intense summer heat in full swing, people are now returning to such natural and healthier options.
Experts say it is time to embrace traditional wisdom and choose clay pots, a healthier alternative for staying cool, over synthetic methods.
