Robbery accused nabbed after gunfight with Sonepat police
The Sonepat Police arrested a robbery suspect after a brief encounter on Wednesday, solving two major incidents involving the armed looting of a cab and cash from a liquor shop last week. The accused, identified as Amit alias Ammy from Lajpat Nagar in Ghaziabad, sustained a bullet injury during the daylight encounter and was rushed to the civil hospital for treatment.
The first case was reported by Aas Mohammad, a cab driver from Narela, Delhi, who told the Bahalgarh police that two youth had hired his Swift Dzire taxi for Rs 1,500 to Panipat. As they reached near Jurasik Park on NH-44, one youth asked to stop the car. "Suddenly, one of them pulled a pistol on me while the other dragged me out of the vehicle. They fled with my car and mobile phone," he said.
Shortly after, the same duo looted Rs 1.25 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from a liquor shop near Rathdhana village after assaulting the staff. "One of them, who had long hair, even fired a shot at the liquor bottles before fleeing towards Meerut," said an eyewitness.
Following the incidents, DCP Crime Narender Singh Kadyan formed multiple police teams. Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Unit Kundli, led by SI Jitender, learned that Amit was hiding near the Kurad bypass and planning another robbery.
“As the police surrounded him, he ran towards the fields of Kurar village and opened fire on the police team. SI Jitender returned fire in the air and warned him to surrender. When he pointed the pistol at our team, we had to shoot. He was injured and apprehended,” said ASI Manoj, who led the second team.
Police recovered a pistol from the accused. DCP Kadyan said Amit confessed to robbing the Swift Dzire and liquor shop, and also revealed his role in a separate Rs 50 lakh cash heist in Delhi.
He is currently under treatment at Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College, Khanpur Kalan. A case has been registered at Murthal Police Station.
