Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsThough the Municipal Corporation (MC) has improved door-to-door waste collection and the lifting of garbage from dumping points, much more remains to be done to ensure cleanliness in Rohtak, as heaps of unattended waste continue to line several roads.
During a visit to various parts of the city on Saturday to review cleanliness and beautification efforts, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sachin Gupta found waste lying unattended at several locations, with stray cattle rummaging through it. However, he noted marked improvement at many spots compared with his inspection around two months ago.
“The cleanliness campaign was launched about two months ago. During today’s surprise inspection, positive outcomes of this campaign were clearly visible. However, more work still needs to be done in the area of hygiene and beautification. Around a dozen HCS officers have been assigned duties in different wards. These officers continuously inspect their respective areas and ensure that any shortcomings are rectified,” said the DC.
He added that a new sanitation tender had been issued by the MC and new vehicles had been deployed for waste collection.
Urging public cooperation, Gupta said residents must dispose of waste only in municipal vehicles to ensure scientific waste management. He also indicated that waste collection timings could be adjusted for public convenience.
“The administration is working to eliminate secondary garbage points, which will only be possible if people stop dumping waste in open areas and use the collection vehicles instead. It is our collective responsibility to keep the city clean and beautiful and citizens’ cooperation is essential in this regard,” said the DC, who also appealed to residents not to burn garbage due to its harmful impact on air quality.
Gupta inspected Ambedkar Chowk, Sonipat Stand, Mansarovar Park, Model Town, Rajiv Gandhi Chowk, Circuit House Road, Rupya Chowk, Jhajjar Road, Jhajjar Chungi, Circular Road and other areas as part of the ongoing cleanliness review. He also inspected Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Later, speaking to the media, the DC urged shopkeepers to cooperate in the anti-encroachment drive. “The campaign is being carried out for the benefit of shopkeepers themselves. Removing encroachments will open up the markets, ease movement, enhance footfall, increase sales and make the markets look more attractive,” he said.
