Rohtak health varsity faculty hails NMC proposal for rotatory headship
The National Medical Commission’s (NMC) proposal to introduce a three-year rotatory headship system in medical colleges has brought renewed hope to many senior doctors at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (UHSR), who have long aspired to become head of their departments but unable to do so due to no provision for rotatory headship.
Significantly, a similar proposal to implement rotatory headship at the UHSR was approved by its executive council (EC) a long time ago and forwarded to the Governor for final approval. However, the proposal is yet to be implemented.
“As per the proposal, faculty members who have served as department heads for three years or more will be succeeded by the next most senior eligible colleague. Rotatory headship is also recognised as a significant ordinance under the UGC Act,” said a senior faculty member at UHSR.
Another faculty member added, “Every qualified faculty member deserves the opportunity to lead their department. The rotatory headship system ensures equitable access to leadership roles, prevents monopoly, and brings diverse perspectives to departmental management. The state government should act promptly to implement it at UHSR.”
A senior doctor from the Post-Graduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Rohtak, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Many of us have been waiting for the implementation of rotatory headship for a long time. We are optimistic that it will be enforced in Haryana soon.”
UHSR Vice Chancellor Prof HK Aggarwal said the university had already forwarded the proposal to the state authorities for approval.
