Despite the Rohtak Municipal Corporation (MC) arranging temporary garbage collection services following the expiry of contracts with two private waste management firms, the efforts have proven inadequate. As a result, residents are forced to dispose of household waste themselves at nearby dumping sites.

Frustrated by the situation, many locals are approaching their municipal councillors to report the issue and seek resolution. In response, some councillors have begun sending garbage collection rickshaws to affected areas to assist the residents.

“The garbage collection vehicle has not been coming to our locality for the past three days. We are left with no option but to take our waste to the nearest dumping site, as we can’t store it at home for more than 24 hours. Every morning and evening, people can be seen dumping garbage in polybags and plastic buckets at a site near Bal Bhawan,” said Sunita, a resident of Palace Vihar.

She added that since taxes for civic services were charged from the residents, it was the corporation’s responsibility to ensure regular door-to-door garbage collection.

Rajesh, a resident of Saini Pura, shared similar concerns. “The MC was aware that the contracts with the private firms would expire on June 30. Why didn’t they make alternative arrangements in advance? It’s not just our locality—several areas across Rohtak are suffering due to the lack of household garbage collection.”

Gulshan Juneja, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, highlighted the inconvenience faced by the residents. “With no collection service in place, people are forced to carry garbage on their scooters or other vehicles to the dumping points. Some have even started disposing of waste in vacant plots, which is alarming,” he said.

Juneja said he had approached his ward councillor, Kanchan Khurana, to inform her of the issue. “She responded promptly and sent a rickshaw to collect garbage from our house. But this is only a temporary fix. The MC needs to provide a permanent solution immediately,” he urged.

Ward14 councillor Kanchan Khurana confirmed she had been receiving complaints from several localities, including Subhash Nagar, Model Town, Adarsh Nagar, New Chinaut Colony, and Srinagar Colony. “We are dispatching the rickshaws to collect garbage on receiving the complaints,” she said.

A spokesperson for the Municipal Corporation stated that all possible efforts, with the assistance of the previous contractors, were being made to clear garbage from dumping points in order to maintain cleanliness in the city. He also mentioned that door-to-door garbage collection was still taking place in several localities.

“A short-term tender for a period of three months will be opened on Friday, which will help restore full door-to-door garbage collection services,” he added.
