Rohtak varsity rolls out initiative to enhance social connect of students
As part of its outreach initiative, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) has launched a 180-hour skill enhancement-cum-internship programme aimed at strengthening community engagement and encouraging student participation in social
service activities.
The programme is open to both undergraduate and post-graduate students of the university. Interested students can enroll through the University Outreach Programme (UOP) app, a digital platform designed to streamline the registration process and facilitate connections between students, faculty and community service opportunities.
“The initiative aims to provide students with regular opportunities to engage in community service, while also encouraging self-reliance and personal development. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded a certificate, which can serve multiple purposes, including job applications and evidence of community involvement. The programme is aligned with the objectives of the New Education Policy (NEP),” said Prof Rajbir Singh, Vice-Chancellor.
He pointed out that students can showcase a variety of socially relevant activities under the programme, including household responsibilities, participation in awareness campaigns and other forms of community service. However, students are required to upload supporting documents, images, videos or even YouTube links as proof of their work.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the app features GPS-based location tracking and real-time push notifications to keep faculty members informed of student submissions.
“The UOP app will act as a hub for students, faculty and administrators. Students can log in using their registration credentials, explore available service opportunities and choose projects that align with their interests. Each student will be assigned a faculty mentor based on their selected programme to provide personalised guidance throughout their service journey,” the VC stated.
Prof Suresh Chander Malik, Dean of Academic Affairs at MDU, said the initiative marks a significant step toward integrating academic learning with real-world
social engagement.
“It will not only enhance students’ skills but also instill in them a strong sense of civic duty and social awareness. We are committed to implementing the NEP effectively so that students can derive maximum benefit from it,” Prof Malik added.
Sunil Jaglan, Professor of Practice, said “This is the first time that students are being encouraged to engage in social connection as part of fulfilling their social responsibility during their studies.”
