Karnal: Role of AI in dairy farming discussed

A workshop on ‘Application of artificial intelligence and Internet of things (IoT)-enabled sensor technologies for precision dairy farming’ was organised at the Livestock Production Management (LPM) Division of the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute. The workshop was organised under the Institutional Development Plan — National Agricultural Higher Education Project (IDP-NAHEP).

The message of Dr Dheer Singh, Director and Vice-Chancellor of the NDRI-Deemed University, was conveyed to the participants, in which Singh emphasised on AI and IoT and said these two ground-breaking technologies were important for the livestock sector. These were revolutionising many industries, including agriculture and animal sciences.

Singh said these precision livestock farming techniques gave certainty and predictability to farming and would help in monitoring the movement, location, breeding, feeding and animal welfare of our livestock.

Dr Rajan Sharma, Joint Director (Research), said IoT and AI-devices were the future of livestock management and vital for dairy farmers by which they could connect their farm through the Internet round the clock.

Two expert speakers, Dr Ritesh Kumar from the CSIR-Chandigarh and Dr Mukesh Saini from IIT, Ropar, Punjab, shared their experiences with the faculty and students at the workshop.
