Gurugram, February 23
In a major boost to road infrastructure of NCR cities of Faridabad and Gurugram, the Haryana Government has allocated a whopping Rs 4,600 crore for the same.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal, while presenting the Budget in state Assembly today, allocated a whopping Rs 3,400 crore to the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) and Rs 1,200 crore to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for enhancing and improving road infrastructure in addition to the allocation of Rs 900 crore for water supply and sewerage network strengthening.
‘Would help to plan a decade ahead’
The allocation will truly help the FMDA and GMDA to expand the ambit of ideation and execution of expansion and improvement. We are currently working on projects keeping an entire decade in mind. We will soon be preparing a way ahead to ensure the proper utilisation of these funds. Spokesperson of FMDA & GMDA
The state government, citing roads as one of the key benchmarks of development in the NCR districts, said the funds would ensure that they would have an apt road network to match the expressways passing through or in the vicinity of the two cities.
“The allocation will truly help the FMDA and GMDA to expand the ambit of ideation and execution of expansion and improvement. We are currently working on projects keeping an entire decade in mind. We will soon be preparing a way ahead to ensure the proper utilisation of these funds,” said official spokesperson of FMDA and GMDA.
It may be noted that according to a survey carried in 2023 by the NCR board, over 30 per cent of the internal and peripheral roads of the Expressway were in a poor condition and required attention.
Though called face of modern Haryana, Gurugram struggles with enormous complaints of ill-maintained and poor road infrastructure. A majority of the roads under the ambit of the GMDA lie in the New Gurugram area or are peripheral patches of Expressways and are in a poor condition. It may be noted that the NHAI has repeatedly flagged this state to the GMDA along with local residents. They have issued an appeal to CM Khattar who would be in city for the Gurugram marathon on February 25.
Similarly, around 20 per cent of Faridabad and Gurugram still are to be covered under regular water supply. The allocation of funds for the same is expected to help the GMDA to ensure water supply to the tail-end sectors. With the Gurugram’s population likely to touch 66.2 lakh by 2041, its water requirement will reach 1,408.9 million litres per day (MLD) — a 121% rise from the existing demand of 637.2 MLD. This was stated in the infrastructure development plan prepared by the IIT Roorkee, which was assigned the task of estimating the city’s future water needs and proposing steps for better water management by the GMDA.
