Tightening its grip on chronic property tax defaulters, the Karnal Municipal Corporation launched a major crackdown, sealing establishments with long-pending dues. The aggressive drive resulted in the attachment of properties of seven major defaulters, who collectively owed around Rs 24 lakh and the sealing of multiple commercial units across the city.

The operation, which began at 10 am, was led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Abhay Singh, along with Zonal Taxation Officer Ankush Prashar, Tax Superintendent Gagandeep Singh and other municipal staff. Fourteen commercial establishments owing a combined total of Rs 72 lakh in property tax were identified for enforcement action.

The drive kicked off with the sealing of a well-known sweet shop at Hospital Chowk, which had outstanding dues of Rs 3.78 lakh. As the team moved from one location to another, the action sparked immediate responses — owners of six establishments paid their dues on the spot, leading to a swift recovery of Rs 48.70 lakh in a single day. One defaulter, owing Rs 6.38 lakh, requested a two-day grace period.

MC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma emphasised that the sealing and attachment campaign would continue against all defaulters. “We urge property owners to pay their taxes promptly for the city’s development. Regular drives will be conducted,” she said. She further clarified that the action was taken under Section 130 of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, which empowers the civic body to attach and seal properties in default.

According to MC sources, a staggering Rs 300 crore in property tax remains pending from both government and non-government establishments across the city.
