Aiming at making the process of issuance and returning of books hurdle-free, new features have been added in the IT-equipped library of the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) including an alert will sound if anyone tries to take the book outside the library without official issuance.

IT-equipped kiosks

Equipped with a library management system (LMS), this library has open access to the latest automation facilities for hassle-free transactions. Two self-issuance, borrow and re-issuance kiosks along with two book drop stations have been set up in the library so that the students can get the books issued or returned on their own and for it, they do not require any assistance from the library staff.Besides, the college authority has also added a new feature of re-issuing the book from any location without visiting the library which will save time also. As per the authorities, every book has an RFID tag, which makes the process of issuance and return of books easy.

“We have 5616 books in the library and every book has an RFID tag. The process of issuance/borrowing and re-issuance of the book is very easy through the kiosk, which does not require any assistance. A student has to place the library-cum-i-card on the scanner of the kiosk, after which the details of the student will be displayed with the status of books issued or fine if any. Subsequently, the student will place the book he/she wants to take on the scanner and the book will be issued automatically to the student,” said Dr. Jagdish Dureja, Director KCGMC.“If someone with a fake ID or unregistered card tries to borrow the library, the system will not allow the issuance of the book,” he added.

Director said that at the entry/exit point, they have installed a high-security system, and if any student takes a book out from the library without permission, an alarm will sound, alerting the staff. After reading the book the student can drop it in the book drop station. Once the item is returned, a message will be displayed on the screen as well as a slip will be generated. After the book is returned, it will be deducted from the account of the student, he added.
