Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) chief Kumari Selja on Wednesday said the BJP believes in divide and rule, not in development while the Congress prefers to keep its promises.

She was in the city to inaugurate the party office for the Ambala Municipal Corporation election and addressed a gathering in support of Congress’ mayoral candidate Meena Aggarwal.

During her address, Selja said: “For the first time, the Congress is contesting the MC election on its symbol and it is an opportunity for us to strengthen the party’s base at the grassroots level. For the last few years, there is no party structure in Haryana but we are confident that all Congress workers will strengthen the network. The manifesto is being prepared and it will be released soon. Some workers are unhappy with the selection of candidates but we will try to persuade them and ask them to work for the party.”

While taking a dig at Congress workers who quit and joined other parties to contest the election, she said no one was bigger than the party.

The HPCC chief further said: “The Covid pandemic has wasted the entire year, but the government is least bothered about development. The BJP has made hollow promises. During the Congress regime, the city witnessed a lot of development but now it has come to a standstill.”

On being asked about the impact of Venod Sharma’s HJP (V) and Nirmal Singh’s HDF in the MC poll, she said: “Their parties have made the contest multi-cornered, otherwise it would been a direct contest between the Congress and the BJP.”
