Sirsa cops sent to Civil Lines after alleged assault on law students
In a recent development, Sirsa police officials have been line attached following accusations of assaulting law students from Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU). On December 5, a group of law students claimed they were allegedly beaten by police officials while travelling to their university library at night.
The incident took place around 12:30 am, when Civil Lines Police Station SHO Dinkar Yadav and ASI Avtar Singh reportedly stopped the students near the bus stand.
According to the students, the police officials appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and asked to see their identity cards. After the students showed their IDs, ASI Avtar Singh allegedly insulted them and physically attacked one student by grabbing him by the neck and pushing him.
The students said in their complaint that the situation escalated when SHO Dinkar Yadav ordered the students to be forcibly taken into a police jeep. One of the students, Nirmal Singh, was slapped multiple times, while ASI Avtar Singh allegedly continued to beat another student. The officials then called for a second jeep to transport the remaining students, pushing them into the vehicle.
The students, fearing the consequences, pleaded with the police officials to let them go, as some of them had exams the next day. The police eventually dropped them at a remote location, warning them before leaving.
The incident remained unaddressed for 20 days until members of the District Bar Association and other law students raised the issue and demanded justice. They submitted a petition to the District and Sessions Judge, Vani Gopal Sharma, and later approached Sirsa’s SP, Vikrant Bhushan. In response, the SP line attached both SHO Dinkar Yadav and ASI Avtar Singh, although no formal charges have been filed against them.
However, the students have expressed dissatisfaction with the suspension, accusing the police of covering up the incident and failing to take proper action. They are now considering legal action and are preparing to approach the court for further investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, SHO Dinkar Yadav has denied the allegations, claiming they were "baseless." He stated that the officials were on routine duty and when they saw 8-9 people together at around 1 am, they questioned them. He further clarified that the students were allowed to go after identification and no physical assault occurred.
This is not the first time SHO Dinkar Yadav has faced controversy. Earlier in July, during the Chief Minister’s event at Sirsa, he was accused of misbehaving with a vehicle driver while on duty at Barnala Road.
