Sirsa police have issued a special advisory to protect residents from cyberfraud. In this digital age, cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to commit fraud. Recently, they have been using a virus called BingoMod to attack users’ bank accounts.

According to SP Vikrant Bhushan, cybercriminals send users suspicious links. When users click on these links, the virus infiltrates their mobile phones, laptops or computers via SMS. Once installed, the virus steals banking details and empties accounts. It is also known as ‘self-destructive malware’.

Bhushan said that BingoMod was programmed to spread itself from an infected device to other devices via SMS. “It has a self-destruction feature. It removes itself and resets the infected device to factory settings after stealing the banking information, leaving users unaware of what happened,” Bhushan added.

He advised residents to avoid clicking on suspicious links received on WhatsApp, email or other social media platforms. Bhushan emphasised the importance of staying vigilant and cautious. He urged the residents to avoid sharing personal information and to report cyberfraud incidents immediately to the local police or call the cyber helpline at 1930 for prompt action.— OC
