Six challaned for littering, using banned plastic
A team of the Municipal Corporation conducted inspections to check the single-use plastic and littering in the market places in the town and issued challans for littering and use of single-use plastic.
The inspection team included Chief Sanitary Inspector (CSI) Rajkumar, technical expert Jasbir Kundu, and another official Pradeep Jakhar. MC Commissioner Neeraj urged shopkeepers to avoid using polythene bags thinner than 120 microns.
The MC spokesperson said the MC sanitation wing apprised the shopkeepers and the other people about the environmental hazards of single-use plastic, stating that it did not decompose and released toxic fumes when burnt. The spokesperson said plastic waste blocked rainwater absorption, leading to a decline in groundwater levels.
The spokesperson said three shopkeepers in Sector 13 Market were fined for using single-use plastic, while three shops near ITI Chowk were penalised for littering at public places.
