The Irrigation Department is set to commence the third phase of remodelling of the Karna Canal (previously known as Mughal Canal), a major drain passing through the city, stretching from the National Highway-44 to the augmentation canal. The authorities said the project would strengthen the pathway along the canal with the laying of paver blocks and strengthen the side slopes with brick lining.

Infra upgrade

  • The authorities said the project aimed to strengthen the pathway along the canal with the laying of paver blocks and strengthen the side slopes with brick lining
  • They claimed that this step would not only beautify the canal but also increase its durability, prevent erosion and increase accessibility for visitors
  • The project was undertaken as residents complained that the drain was an eyesore and emitted a foul smell

They claimed that this step would not only beautify the canal but also increase its durability, prevent erosion and accessibility for visitors, providing a direct connectivity route for commuters between the NH-44 and the Meerut road.

This step is being initiated under the Karnal Smart City project, and an estimated expenditure of Rs 20 crore will be incurred on it. Karnal Smart City Ltd. (KSCL) has transferred the funds for the work. “We have released the funds to the Irrigation Department, which has to complete it by June 30, 2024,” stated Ramphal, GM, KSCL.

The project has been divided into two phases. “The work will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, between Heritage Lawn Road and the augmentation canal, has been allotted, and the work is expected to commence in a couple of days, while the second phase, between the NH-44 and the Heritage Lawn Road, has been submitted for approval to the higher authorities,” said Navtej Singh, XEN, Irrigation Department. He emphasised the importance of the project, stating, “Our goal is not only to strengthen the infrastructure but also to enhance its overall appearance.”

Previously known as the Mughal Canal, this drain was renamed Karna Canal by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar recently. The first phase of remodelling, from Fountain Park to Choudhary Ranbir Hooda Chowk, has been completed, with markets constructed on both sides. Under the second phase, the canal stretch from Choudhary Ranbir Hooda Chowk to NH-44 has been completely covered and a vegetable market has been developed on it.

Officials said this initiative was undertaken after residents complained that the drain was an eyesore and emitted a foul smell. Cleaning is required before the monsoon season to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater. “The development of the canal in the third phase will address various issues faced by residents and provide a better environment for those living in the vicinity,” said Renu Bala Gupta, outgoing Mayor.
