The Sonepat Metropolitan Development Authority (SMDA) has approved a budget of Rs 363 crore for various infrastructure-related development projects in the Sonepat Metropolitan Area for the financial year of 2024-25. The decision was taken in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister (CM) Nayab Singh Saini.

The CM said the SMDA Act, 2023, was notified by the state government on October 3, 2023. He said the Act was aimed at fostering a vision for the sustained and balanced growth of the Sonepat Metropolitan Area. He said there was no dearth of funds for the development works, and that additional resources would be allocated to the SMDA to support the sustainable management of the urban environment.

The body has approved a Rs 22.81-crore project for the four-laning of master roads connecting Sectors 59/64, 59/60, 62/63, 60/64 and 59/60. The completion of this project will significantly enhance the road network in these sectors. Besides, a Rs 8.33-crore project to lay master sewer links in Sectors 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64 was approved by the body. The SMDA also approved the construction of balance stretches by four-laning the master roads at cost of Rs 16.10 crore.

With a view to ensure adequate supply of clean potable water in Liwan and Rai villages, the authority also accorded approval for the construction of an intermediate boosting station in Rajiv Gandhi Education City and two boosting stations, and laying of a 11,555-m pipeline in these villages at estimated cost of Rs 10.19 crore.

Owing to an increase in the population of Rathdhana village, it was also decided in the meeting that a 30 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) would be constructed at a cost of Rs 90 crore. A decision was also taken to construct a 7.50 MLD STP at Kundli at a cost of Rs 54.69 crore. At present, there is no sewerage network or STP in the town for the treatment of untreated household water.

Apart from this, several other projects and works, including the setting up of an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on the lines of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA); development of the Sports Stadium at Sector 4; improvement and beautification of Tau Devi Lal Park on National Highway-44 and Leisure Valley Park; master sewer and stormwater services for Sectors 26, 26A, 33, 34, 35 and 36; construction of a railway underbridge under Geeta Bhawan Flyover and preparation of a comprehensive mobility plan for the Sonepat Metropolitan Area were also approved during the meeting.

SMDA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) KM Pandurang gave an overview of the development projects planned for the current financial year.
