Rohtak, April 18

Students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Kalanaur town have been attending classes for just three days in a week since April 11 as there is not enough space to accommodate them in the local Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School, where they have been attending classes for the past two and a half years.

Earlier the students were being accommodated in morning and evening shifts but due to board exams of classes X and XII from 12.30 pm to 3 pm, the classes had to be curtailed. The board exams will end on April 27. The building of girls’ school was declared unsafe in September 2019, and since then the classes for its students are being held in the Sanskriti School. The strength of the Sanskriti School is 1,006 while 899 students are enrolled in the girls’ school.

“Just 12 rooms are made available to the girls’ school for students from classes I to XII, forcing tutors to hold some classes in verandahs,” said a teacher.

Devender Kataria, principal of the girls’ school, admitted facing space crunch. “We have requested the higher authorities to construct a new building for the school at the earliest. A budget of Rs 3.63 crore has been sanctioned by the Department of Finance,” he said.

Sunita Chahal, principal of the Sanskriti School, said both schools were being adversely affected with current arrangement. “The situation has created drinking water and sanitation issues. The higher authorities have been apprised of the problems,” she added.

Congress MLA from Kalanaur Shakuntla Khatak claimed, “I highlighted the issue in the Assembly session and the Chief Minister promised to take action but nothing has been done so far.”
