With a view to eradicating the English phobia of Haryanavi students and help them score good marks in the subject, special training sessions are being organised for English teachers at the state government-run schools in Haryana.

The Haryana School Shiksha Pariyojna Parishad (HSSPP) is executing an ambitious academic initiative of the Union Government titled “Professional Development of English Teachers Programme,” which will also prepare schoolteachers for Saksham-Plus project.

“We have covered Classes III to VIII and the subjects of Hindi, Mathematics, EVS, Science and Social Studies in 119 blocks across the state under the Saksham project. The blocks declared Saksham have now been brought under the ambit of the Saksham-Plus project in which we plan to include English from the upcoming academic session,” said Rakesh Gupta, State Project Director, HSSPP.

The ongoing professional development programme is aimed at preparing English teachers at government schools to ensure the success of the Saksham-Plus project which had a special focus on English, he added.

As per official sources, it had been noted that a number of students studying at government-run schools in the state seemed to have an English phobia and the low scores obtained by them in English subject affects their overall result. Hence, the underlying idea behind the ongoing exercise is to improve the teaching skills of the inadequately performing teachers so as to improve the results of the students. In the first phase of the programme, orientation workshops were conducted for the master-trainers at the state headquarters.

As of now, the second phase of the exercise is under way in which master-trainers are imparting training to the government schoolteachers at the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) in a non-resident training module.
