To review the current status of sex ratio in the district and to work towards its improvement, a meeting of the District Standing Committee was organised on Friday at the Mini-Secretariat auditorium, which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Preeti, who directed the officials to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the PCPNDT and MTP Acts.
DC Preeti emphasised that the committee should particularly focus on those villages where the sex ratio is either low or has shown a decline compared to previous records. She instructed the officials to identify the reasons behind this fall and frame an effective strategy to counter the problem. “Female foeticide is a serious crime and must be dealt with strict measures. All departments concerned must work collectively on this sensitive issue,” she added.
She directed for tighter monitoring of ultrasound, MTP and IVF centres, along with regular inspections. She also called for strengthening awareness activities under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign and ensuring that Anganwari and ASHAs remained active in gathering ground-level information. Any information related to sex determination or illegal abortion must be immediately shared with the police or the
Health Department and the identity of the informant would be kept confidential.
Highlighting the importance of social awareness, DC Preeti said parents should be educated about the value of having daughters, with emphasis on promoting girls’ education and health. Schools should regularly discuss gender equality during prayer assemblies, encouraging the idea that boys and girls are equal, so that children grow up with this mindset.
The DC also instructed the Police Department to maintain updated records of ultrasound and MTP centres in their respective areas. If any illegal centres were found operating, strict accountability and action would be taken. Those involved in cases of sex determination or female foeticide would face stringent legal action. She expressed hope that with these concerted efforts, the district would witness a positive change in sex ratio.
