Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a former CM, has said NITI Aayog has once again shown the mirror to the BJP government as its report has revealed that Haryana is far behind other states in terms of higher education.

“Haryana has lagged behind even its closest neighbouring states. The basis for the report is financing, ranking and quality of education. The report shows that even in terms of university ranking, Haryana is performing poorly,” he said.

The government was making less budgetary allocation for the education sector compared to neighbouring states, he said, adding that, “Even two years ago, the government had proposed to give loans to the state's public universities in place of grant-in-aid. Due to the BJP's indifferent attitude, the dropout rate in higher education is increasing, and a large number of seats are vacant in courses of colleges and universities.”

As per the report, the density of higher education in Haryana is also less as compared to the neighbouring states, and the quality of higher education and the lack of regular teachers in large numbers remains a matter of concern.

Hooda said there was not even a single student in 28 primary schools of the state, while 262 schools had only one to 10 students. “There are 520 schools where there are only 11 to 20 students; eight middle schools with no students; 12 schools where the number is one to 10; and 73 where the number is 11 to 20,” he added.
