Dr Virendra Singh Chauhan, director of the Haryana Rural Development Institute, said on Wednesday that citizens must apply the values and principles of the Indian Constitution in their daily lives. Speaking at a Constitution Day programme at the Panchayat Bhawan in Sirsa, he said while the Constitution drew on ideas from around the world, its core remained firmly rooted in Indian knowledge and tradition.
“The Constitution reflects centuries-old Indian culture in every thought, provision and law,” Dr. Chauhan said at the event, organised jointly by the Haryana Rural Development Institute, Nilokheri and the District Council. The ceremony was live-streamed by India’s Ministry of Panchayati Raj for audiences across several states.
Dr Chauhan said alongside rights, citizens must also be mindful of the duties outlined in the Constitution. He paid tribute to Haryana’s contributors to the Constitution, including Mahavir Tyagi (Ambala), Balwant Rai Mehta and Chaudhary Ranbir Singh (Rohtak), Deshraj Pandit (Karnal), Harbans Singh (Kurukshetra) and Kishori Lal (Hisar).
The event was attended by District Council CEO Dr Subhash Chandra, Sirsa Municipal Committee Chairman Shanti Swaroop, experts from the State Panchayat Resource Centre, Nilokheri, including Dr. Neelam Chikara, among others. The programme featured the unveiling of a preamble wall and a collective reading of the Constitution’s preamble.
