State sees 14.62% dip in registered crime cases

Crimes against women have also reduced by 19.24%

Haryana has witnessed a dip in crime figures by 14.62%. While 1,59,610 cases were registered in 2023, the number fell to 1,36,269 in 2024—a decrease of 23,341 cases. Similarly, crimes against women, such as rape, have reduced by 19.24%, attempts to rape by 43.72%, sexual harassment by 36.82%, and dowry deaths by 14%.

In 2023, a total of 1,042 murder cases were reported, compared to 950 in 2024, marking the first such decline in 15 years since 2009.

DGP Shatrujeet Kapur said due to the efforts of the police, crime had reduced by 14.62% in 2024 compared to 2023. He said steps were being taken for women’s safety. Crowded hotspots and 443 sensitive locations prone to harassment had been identified. Over 1,381 CCTV cameras had been installed, and special police deployment was ensuring swift action against offenders, leading to a significant decline in crimes against women.

The police helpline, 112, responded to complaints within 6 minutes and 41 seconds, down from 16 minutes and 14 seconds in 2021, he said.

In 2024, rape cases decreased from 1,772 in 2023 to 1,431, reflecting a 19.24% drop—the lowest in seven years. Attempt to rape cases also reduced significantly, from 199 in 2023 to 112 in 2024, marking a 43.72% decline. Sexual harassment cases dropped from 2,265 in 2023 to 1,431 in 2024.

The police launched a Trip Monitoring Service for women travelling alone. Women can call 112 to report their travel details, and their journey is monitored until they reach their destination. So far, 114 women have benefited from this service. Additionally, a database of public transport vehicles had been prepared, with unique numbers displayed on the vehicles, enabling police to access driver details.

Cases under the SC/ST Act fell by 35.35%, from 1,539 in 2023 to 995 in 2024.

The police have identified 4,943 habitual offenders and were keeping them under surveillance.

Robbery cases dropped by 39.34% from 122 in 2023 to 74 in 2024, the lowest in 20 years. Vehicle thefts reduced by 12.78%, with 15,577 cases in 2024 compared to 17,860 in 2023. Extortion cases fell by 14.58%.

Road accidents also declined, with 657 fewer incidents in 2024 than in 2023. Fatal accidents dropped by 5.65%, with 279 fewer deaths and 432 fewer injuries.

The police have set up night-time checkpoints and launched Operation Akraman to crack down on criminals. In 2024, 10 such operations resulted in 4,239 FIRs and the arrest of 8,307 criminals, including 1,201 gang members and 460 wanted fugitives.

A crackdown has also been initiated against drug traffickers. Under the NDPS Act, 3,331 cases were registered and 5,094 criminals were arrested, including 950 major traffickers involved in 438 cases of commercial quantities. In 2024, property worth Rs 7.04 crore of 25 drug traffickers had been seized.

The police also established a Feedback Cell in 2024 to evaluate public satisfaction with police action. Of the 5,83,567 complaints received, feedback was collected from 82% of complainants, with 73% expressing satisfaction.
