Gurugram, January 29

The stray dog that had mauled an eight-year-old girl in Gurugram a few days ago was allegedly shot dead in Sector 23 today. Activists have filed a complaint with the police over cruelty against an animal, claiming that the dead animal was actually a jackal.

“This is mindless mob justice. The dog has been shot dead. Officials of the Police Department and Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG), spotted the body and have taken its custody. If we look closely, it appears that the body is of a jackal. We will get the matter investigated and demand action against the accused. The MCG’s inability to vaccinate the stray dogs has led to these canine attacks,” said Chetna Joshi, an activist.

Members of a local residents’ welfare association, who have been accused of killing the dog, have refused any involvement in the incident, claiming they have no idea about it.

“We don’t have the confirmation regarding the animal’s death. We had been working with the MCG for four days to find the body and ensure that it was not rabid, but couldn’t do so. As of now, we can‘t even confirm whether the body is of the same dog who had killed the girl,” said Neeru Yadav, Sector 23 RWA President.

It may be noted that four days ago an eight-year-old girl, daughter of a construction labourer, was reportedly mauled by a stray dog in Sector 23 here.

Following the incident, the enraged residents have been demanding immediate intervention of the government to tackle the stray dog menace in the city.

After The Tribune reported the incident, the MCG has ordered local RWAs to identify the feeding points for stray dogs, arrange pick up for the aggressive ones and ensure that the stray canines are vaccinated.
